Character Omission
Removes one character at a time from the domain name, simulating common typing mistakes where users accidentally skip a letter.
How It Works
This technique removes one character at a time from the domain name. For a domain with N characters, it produces N variations. Attackers register these to catch users who accidentally skip a key while typing quickly. It is one of the most effective typosquatting methods because single-character omissions are the most common typing mistake.
Real-World Examples
- gogle.com (omitting one "o" from google.com) — one of the most famous typosquatting domains
- microsft.com (omitting "o" from microsoft.com)
- amzon.com (omitting "a" from amazon.com)
Prevention Tips
- Register all single-character omission variants of your primary domain.
- Set up monitoring alerts for newly registered omission variants.
- Use browser extensions that warn about suspected typosquatting domains.
